![]() ![]() Seeing Cloud come to terms with the fact that he wasn't the badass he believed he should be, and let go of the same that shackled him, I needed to see that at that specific time in my life. I wasn't interested in talking about my feelings with them. I felt like I had let down my family and friends. At that time, I had recently dropped out of college with no other plan I wanted to pursue and carried with me intense feelings of shame. When I played FF7 for the first time, I was also 21. Then I actually got to experience the real Cloud. I saw him as a no nonsense mercenary whose utmost goal was finishing the job right. So everything I knew about the character came from interpretation and memetic association. I didn't have any PlayStation consoles growing up. The Remake nailed this though, although you don't have full context for why he's like that until you play the actual game, which I should have done first and would recommend anyone thinking about playing Remake do first.Ĭloud was a character that really blindsided me. I went through over a decade of my life believing Cloud was a generic, edgy, anime tough guy. Later interpretations of Cloud (especially Kingdom Hearts, which is where I first met him way back in elementary school) always forgot about the socially awkward loser at the core of his character. Why did nobody tell me he was just a socially awkward dork pretending to be a tough edgy guy but deep down he's a weird sincere emotional person who just wants to fit in. Cloud's later media portrayals in Kingdom Hearts especially never did him justice. ![]() I just got past what I assume is the final Nibelheim flashback and wow, Cloud is a fantastic JRPG protagonist.
